    Divide, never multiply

    The part you know is what you get when the whole is multiplied by the percentage. To recover the whole you have to undo that multiplication, so you divide. If 20 is 25% of a number, then 20 ÷ 0.25 = 80. Multiplying 20 by 25% would give 5 — a correct answer to a completely different question.

    Not the same as a reverse percentage

    Finding the whole works from a share of the total. A reverse percentage works from a value that has already been changed by a percentage — a price after 20% off, for example. The two use different divisors: Part ÷ 0.25 versus Value ÷ 0.80. Choosing the wrong one is one of the most common percentage mistakes.

    Edge cases

    • 0%: undefined. 0% of every number is 0, so a 0% share tells you nothing about the total.
    • Above 100%: the whole comes out smaller than the part. 120 is 150% of 80 — correct, not an error.
    • Rounding: results marked “≈” are rounded for display only; the calculation itself is unrounded.

    Limitations

    • A percentage of 0 makes the whole undefined: a 0% share carries no information about the total.
