How Discount Percentages Work
A discount reduces a price by a given percentage. Retailers use them for seasonal sales, clearance events, loyalty rewards, and promotional campaigns. Being able to quickly calculate the final price helps you comparison-shop confidently and avoid impulse purchases that aren't actually good deals.
The Formula: Final Price = Original Price × (1 − Discount% ÷ 100)
The savings amount is simply the original price multiplied by the discount rate. For a $80 item at 20% off: $80 × 0.20 = $16 saved, leaving a final price of $64.
Smart Shopping Scenarios
- Stacked discounts: A $200 jacket is 30% off, and you have a 10% member coupon. Apply 30% first ($200 → $140), then 10% ($140 → $126). Note: this is not the same as 40% off ($120).
- Bulk buying: A supplier offers 15% off orders over $500. On a $750 order, you save $112.50 — paying $637.50 instead.
- Comparing stores: Store A sells a TV at $899 with 25% off ($674.25). Store B lists it at $729 with 10% off ($656.10). Store B wins despite the smaller percentage.
