They are measuring different things — percentage change and percentage difference — and mixing them up is one of the most common sources of misleading statistics in the wild.     Notice that percentage change is asymmetric: 80 → 100 is +25%, but 100 → 80 is −20%. Percentage difference is symmetric: swapping the two numbers gives the same answer, because the denominator is their average rather than either one.

    When to use percentage change

    Percentage change is the right tool whenever there is a natural "before" and "after":

    • A share price moving from Monday's close to Friday's close.
    • Revenue this quarter compared with the same quarter last year.
    • Weight before and after a training programme.
    • A discount that takes a $200 jacket down to $150 (a 25% decrease).

    When to use percentage difference

    Percentage difference belongs in situations where the two numbers are peers:

    • Two vendor quotes for the same job — neither is "before" the other.
    • Two lab measurements of the same sample, checking agreement.
    • Two shops selling the same product at different prices.
    • Two candidates polling at 42% and 46% — a 9.1% difference, not a 9.5% "swing".

    Because it is symmetric, percentage difference cannot mislead the reader into thinking one value was the reference. That neutrality is precisely why scientific and quality-control contexts prefer it.

    The classic mistake: asymmetric change reported as difference

    A press release announcing that "Product A is 25% cheaper than Product B" is really reporting percentage change with B as the baseline. Reverse the sentence — "Product B is 33% more expensive than Product A" — and the number changes, even though the two prices have not. Both statements are correct arithmetic; neither is a percentage difference. If you want a single number that does not depend on which product you named first, use percentage difference.

    A worked comparison

    Take a solar panel rated for 320 W that actually delivers 296 W in the field.

    • Percentage change (rated → measured): (296 − 320) ÷ 320 × 100 = −7.5%. Reads as "7.5% below spec".
    • Percentage difference: |296 − 320| ÷ ((296 + 320) ÷ 2) × 100 = 24 ÷ 308 × 100 = 7.79%. Reads as "the two figures disagree by about 7.8%".

    Engineering data sheets normally quote percentage difference for tolerance checks; sales teams normally quote percentage change against spec. Neither is wrong — but the number the customer sees depends entirely on which one is used.

    Common pitfalls

    • Averaging percentages. Two portfolios each gaining 10% do not produce a 20% combined gain — they produce 21% (1.10 × 1.10 − 1).
    • Symmetry after a round trip. A stock down 50% needs a 100% gain to recover, not another 50%.
    • Sign loss. Percentage difference throws away direction. If direction matters, use percentage change and keep the sign.
    • Percentage points. A poll moving from 42% to 46% has changed by 4 percentage points and by 9.5% in relative terms. Both are correct; they are not interchangeable.
