    How to Work Out Percentages in Your Head: 9 Fast Tricks

    Most percentage problems you meet away from a keyboard — a restaurant bill, a sale rack, a quick sanity check on a quote — do not need a calculator. They need two or three reliable shortcuts and the confidence to combine them. This guide gives you nine, ordered from the single most useful trick to the ones that save you in awkward cases, each with a worked example and a practice problem.

    Start from 10%: move the decimal point one place left. 10% of 240 is 24. From there, 5% is half of that (12), 1% is a tenth of it (2.4), and 20% is double it (48). Almost any percentage can be built by adding and halving these anchors — and if a number looks awkward, remember that x% of y always equals y% of x.

    1. The 10% anchor

    Ten percent of any number is that number with the decimal point moved one place to the left. 10% of 680 is 68. 10% of 42.50 is 4.25. This one move is the foundation for everything else, because most everyday percentages are small multiples or fractions of ten.

    2. Build with 5% and 1%

    Once you have 10%, two derived anchors cover nearly every case:

    Any whole percentage from 1 to 99 can be assembled from tens, a five and some ones. That is the whole method.

    3. The reversal trick: x% of y = y% of x

    This identity is exact and criminally underused. 4% of 75 looks unpleasant; 75% of 4 is obviously 3. Likewise 18% of 50 becomes 50% of 18 = 9, and 12% of 25 becomes 25% of 12 = 3. Whenever one of the two numbers is a friendly one — 4, 25, 50, 100 — flip the problem before you start.

    4. Halving chains for 25%, 12.5% and 75%

    Halving is easier than dividing by anything else. 50% is a half, 25% is half again, 12.5% is half once more. To get 75%, take the number, halve it, then add half of that half: 75% of 88 = 44 + 22 = 66.

    5. Tipping in seconds

    For a 20% tip: double the 10% anchor. On a $47 bill, 10% is 4.70, so the tip is 9.40. For 15%, take 10% plus half of it: 4.70 + 2.35 = 7.05. For 18%, take 20% and subtract 2% (two 1% units): 9.40 − 0.94 = 8.46. If you tip regularly, the 10-plus-half rule alone will carry you.

    6. Discounts the fast way

    Instead of calculating the discount and subtracting it, calculate what remains. A 30% discount leaves 70%, so 70% of $60 = 6 × 7 = $42 in one step. This also protects you from the classic stacked-discount error: 20% off then a further 10% off is not 30% off, it is 0.8 × 0.9 = 0.72, so 28% off.

    7. Learn six fraction equivalents

    8. Round, then correct

    For messy numbers, round to something friendly, calculate, then adjust. 15% of 197: treat it as 15% of 200 = 30, then subtract 15% of 3 (about 0.45), giving roughly 29.55. The correction term is almost always small enough to estimate.

    9. The sanity check

    Before you trust any mental answer, ask whether it sits on the right side of the obvious landmarks. Anything under 50% must be less than half the number; anything over 100% must be bigger than the number itself. This single habit catches most decimal-point slips — the error that turns 4.8 into 48.
