Original price 80 is the 100% baseline. The withdrawn segment is 16 saved, which is −20% of that baseline — the value shrinks.

You save 16 and pay 64 — the discount is measured against the original price 80.

    You save
    16

    Formula

    Calculate the saving: 80 × 20% = 16

    Subtract from the price: 80 − 16 = 64

    Verify

    64 ÷ 0.8 = 80

Check it backwards: reversing the discount on the sale price returns the original price.

20% off 80 equals 64. You save 16 and pay 64 — the discount is measured against the original price 80.

    How Discount Percentages Work

A discount reduces a price by a given percentage. Retailers use them for seasonal sales, clearance events, loyalty rewards, and promotional campaigns. Being able to quickly calculate the final price helps you comparison-shop confidently and avoid impulse purchases that aren't actually good deals.

    The Formula: Final Price = Original Price × (1 − Discount% ÷ 100)

The savings amount is simply the original price multiplied by the discount rate. For a $80 item at 20% off: $80 × 0.20 = $16 saved, leaving a final price of $64.

    Smart Shopping Scenarios

    • Stacked discounts: A $200 jacket is 30% off, and you have a 10% member coupon. Apply 30% first ($200 → $140), then 10% ($140 → $126). Note: this is not the same as 40% off ($120).
    • Bulk buying: A supplier offers 15% off orders over $500. On a $750 order, you save $112.50 — paying $637.50 instead.
    • Comparing stores: Store A sells a TV at $899 with 25% off ($674.25). Store B lists it at $729 with 10% off ($656.10). Store B wins despite the smaller percentage.

    Calculation method and limitations

Method: The discount percentage is converted to a decimal, multiplied by the price to get the saving, and subtracted from the price.

    Limitations

    • Stacked discounts multiply rather than add: 20% then 10% off is 28% off, not 30%.
    • Taxes and shipping are not included in the sale price.
    • Rounding to two decimals may differ by a cent from a retailer's own rounding rule.
