    How to Calculate a Grade Percentage (and Weighted Averages)

    Grades are percentages with rules attached. Converting a single mark is trivial; the difficulty appears when coursework counts for 40%, a midterm for 20% and a final for 40%, and you want to know where you actually stand. This guide covers both, plus the calculation students ask for most: what do I need on the final?

    Grade % = (marks earned รท marks available) ร— 100. A score of 43 out of 55 is 43 รท 55 ร— 100 = 78.2%. For weighted grades, multiply each component percentage by its weight as a decimal and add them: 80% coursework at 0.4 plus 70% exam at 0.6 gives 32 + 42 = 74%.

    A single mark to a percentage

    Divide what you scored by what was available, then multiply by 100. 18 out of 25 is 18 รท 25 = 0.72 โ†’ 72%. Note that dropped or unmarked questions change the denominator: if two questions were voided, a test out of 25 becomes out of 23, and the same 18 marks become 78.3%.

    Bonus marks can push a result above 100% โ€” perfectly valid arithmetic, and one of the ways percentages differ from percentiles, which are capped at 100.

    Weighted grade averages

    When components carry different importance, you cannot simply average the percentages. Each one is scaled by its weight:

    Final grade = ฮฃ (component % ร— weight), with weights expressed as decimals that sum to 1.

    The common error is averaging the raw percentages. A student with 90% on a quiz worth 10% and 60% on a final worth 90% has a 63% grade, not 75%.

    The unweighted average of those four scores is 81.5% โ€” nearly two points higher, because the weakest result carries the heaviest weight. Always check that your weights add to 100% before trusting the total.

    Bar length shows each component's contribution against the maximum it could have added. The final exam dominates โ€” which is why late improvement moves the grade most.

    What you need on the final

    Rearrange the weighted formula to solve for the missing piece:

    Needed = (Target โˆ’ points already earned) รท weight of the final

    Say you have banked 48.5 points from coursework, the final is worth 40%, and you want an overall 75%. You need (75 โˆ’ 48.5) รท 0.40 = 66.25% on the final. If the answer comes out above 100%, the target is no longer reachable; if it comes out negative, you have already secured it.

    Scales vary by institution, but a widely used US mapping looks like this:
